WHO WE ARE

Power and Purpose of Worship

Why worship? The simple answer to this question is because you and I were created to glorify God and enjoy him forever. The Church’s worship is transformative and a powerful witness against the narcissistic, me-culture. No one takes selfies in God’s presence. When we enter into worship here on earth, we come to see that God is more important than our present desires, whims, pleasures, and treasures. Worship is where heaven and earth meet. It teaches us that we are not self-sufficient or all-important. This doesn’t come naturally to us because of sin, but the closer we draw near to God in worship, the more we find that our priorities begin to rearrange themselves. Worship lifts us above ourselves and our temporal cares by bringing us face to face with unspeakable majesty. In a word, worship changes us.

The Importance of Bible Study

God has not left us clueless in life. He does not answer all our curiosities, but we have access in the Scriptures to the knowledge through which God grants us divine power to bring us from corruption to partakers of the divine nature. Scriptures, including the Old Testament and the New Testament, are a diverse collection of books written over a thousand-year period, but they fit into one story of redemption.

Understanding this diverse collection may be daunting for someone new to them. Friendswood Church of Christ has ministers and members that would gladly help and address any questions. Friendswood Church of Christ also invites those familiar with the Scriptures to join us as we make every effort to supplement our faith with increasing knowledge.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, …” (2 Timothy 3:16 ESV).

And Scriptures were written “that … through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4 ESV)

We invite you to study along with us!

Baptism

We learn of the importance of baptism in the scriptures and by the example of Jesus Christ. Baptism is a physical way to represent the death, burial and resurrection of a person’s old life and their new life in Christ.

According to the scriptures, someone must be able to make that decision for themselves as they decide to take on Christ as their savior. It is a beautiful moment in a Christian’s life!

Communion

We commemorate the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ on a weekly basis. Doing so has a corporate dimension as the church observes this together, joining with other Christians from all over the world.

Communion also has a vertical dimension between us and God as we remember and reflect on the immeasurable blessing of the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.

Listening for & Connecting to the Holy Spirit

In today’s hustle and bustle world, being in tune to the Holy Spirit can be a challenge, and yet it is a calling that we should all aspire to achieve. As Christians, we believe that the Spirit leads into all truth as we study and meditate on God’s word.

1 Peter 1:22 says “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another with a pure heart."

Seeking Redemption & Grace

Jesus Christ died for us because God loves us and wants to be close to us. Aligning your life with God’s will means you’re free to live in Christ and enjoy His peace.

"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
